When Do Baby Teeth Come In?

If you have a baby, then at some point you’ll start to wonder when their baby teeth will start coming in. For one thing, it’s a huge milestone in your child’s development and will lead to many adorable pictures of the baby smiling. But it’s fair to say most parents aren’t exactly excited about the teething process.

In the following short article from the Kindred Pediatric Dentistry, you can find a timeline on when baby teeth grow and even when you can expect the first one to fall out! If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact our Beaumont infant dentists!

Baby Teeth Growing Timeline

First, you should know that baby teeth don’t come in at an exact date and time. Every baby develops differently, so don’t be too stressed if your baby’s teeth don't follow the timeline below to the letter.

Use it as a general guideline:

  • 6–12 months: During this window, your baby’s first teeth will start growing. Usually, the first ones to come out are the two front bottom and top teeth, known as the incisors.
  • 12–16 months: Next are the lateral incisors, which sit right next to the incisors on each side. Babies usually have all four of these extra teeth by 16 months or so.
  • 16–23 months: Then comes the canines, which are those front pointy teeth. In some cases, the first molars can also start to grow during this window.
  • Up to 33 months: By this point, the child should have a full set of baby teeth.

Usually, children will have a full smile by the time they’re 3 years old or so, just in time to help them as they’re learning to speak and chew their food properly.

When Do Baby Teeth Start to Fall?

Baby teeth usually start to fall at around six or seven years of age, so the child won’t keep their primary teeth for too long.

When the adult ones are ready to erupt, they slowly dissolve the baby tooth root, which causes it to loosen and eventually fall out. This process happens naturally and most often doesn’t need any special intervention.

But taking your child to a pediatric dentist in Beaumont can help make sure their teeth are developing correctly. Experts recommend taking a kid to the dentist as soon as their first baby tooth appears.

This way, you can receive lots of support and tips on how to prepare for these major milestones in your baby’s oral health development.
